What to Wear in Nashville: A Hat-First Outfit Guide by Season

Broadway nights, humid summers, chilly winter evenings and a lot of walking. Here is how to dress for Nashville with a hat, from party felt-look to a proper Stetson.

Nashville is one of the few American cities where walking into a bar in a hat draws no looks at all. On Lower Broadway it is practically the dress code. That freedom is the fun part. The tricky part is that a Nashville trip usually packs three very different settings into one weekend: a loud, packed honky-tonk at midnight, a brunch patio the next morning, and a lot of sidewalk in between. This guide builds outfits around the hat first, because once the hat is right, the rest of the outfit tends to fall into line.

Broadway honky-tonk nights

Lower Broadway is a strip of live-music bars stacked shoulder to shoulder, many with several floors and a band on each one. Expect crowds, standing room, stairs, rooftop decks, and floors that have seen a few spilled beers. Dress for heat even in cooler months, because a full room with a band going gets warm fast.

This is where disco cowboy hats earn their place. A night out on Broadway is a costume-friendly environment, and a bright hat makes it easy for your group to find each other in a crowd. Our Dancehall Retro comes in twelve colors, from red and wine red to navy, camel and white, with a bell crown and a studded band carrying a silver longhorn medallion. It reads as party without looking flimsy, and at a one-size M it is easy to buy for a whole group.

  • Top: a sequin or metallic tank, a fringe vest, or a fitted denim shirt with the sleeves rolled.
  • Bottom: denim shorts in summer, dark jeans or a denim skirt the rest of the year.
  • Bag: a small crossbody that leaves both hands free for stairs and drinks. Many venues have bag rules, so check your venue's hat and bag policy before you go.

If your crew wants matching hats, pick one color for the bride or birthday person and a second color for everyone else. It photographs better than a rainbow and still feels like a theme.

Nashville weather by season

Middle Tennessee has real seasons, and the humidity matters as much as the temperature. Here is how we would plan the hat and outfit for each one.

SeasonWhat it feels likeHat moveOutfit notes
SpringMild days, cool evenings, frequent rainFelt for evenings, straw on warm afternoonsLight jacket, layers, boots you do not mind getting wet
SummerHot and humid, with afternoon stormsStraw by day, party hat at nightBreathable fabrics, shorts or a sundress, sunscreen
FallWarm early, crisp later, often the most comfortable stretchFelt comes back outDenim jacket or suede, jeans, closed-toe boots
WinterCold nights, gray days, occasional freezing weatherFelt or faux furReal coat, warm socks, layers you can shed indoors

Summer is the season most visitors underestimate. Heat and humidity on a midday walk are a different animal from an air-conditioned bar, and a dark felt hat in direct July sun is a long afternoon. For daytime in summer we point people to straw hats. The Rodeo 10X Straw is a good example of what to look for: 10X shantung straw, a cattleman crown with eyelets for airflow, a genuine leather sweatband, and a 4 1/4 inch brim that actually shades your face and neck.

Winter flips the logic. A shaggy hat looks right when it is cold out, and the Plush Party Faux-Fur fits that mood in colors like brown, black, white, light pink and mint green. Pair it with a long coat and a sequin top underneath for a night that starts outside and ends at a crowded bar.

Boots for a walking city

You will walk more than you expect. Broadway is compact, but most visitors end up covering the strip several times a night, plus stairs to rooftops and side trips to neighborhoods like The Gulch or East Nashville. Plan for that.

  • Break them in at home. Brand-new boots on a three-day trip is how blisters happen. Wear them around the house and on errands for at least a week first.
  • Pick a walkable heel. A lower, wider western heel or a roper style is far kinder on pavement than a tall fashion heel.
  • Socks matter. Boot socks that come up past the shaft stop rubbing at the top edge.
  • Pack a backup. A pair of plain sneakers in the suitcase saves the daytime sightseeing.

Shop tip: match the hat to the boots, not the other way around. Brown or tan boots with a camel, fawn or natural hat, black boots with a black or bright party hat. It sounds basic, and it is the single change that makes an outfit look planned.

When to go disco and when to go classic

The honest answer is that a lot of people pack both, and that is a sound plan. The two kinds of hat do different jobs.

Go disco when the night is about the group and the photos: bachelorette weekends, birthdays, a first night on Broadway, any outfit built on sequins, metallic fabric or rhinestones. Disco cowboy hats are bold, inexpensive, and nobody will worry about one getting jostled on a dance floor. We do not stock sequin, rhinestone or light-up hats right now, so the sparkle comes from the clothes and the hat brings the color and the shape.

Go classic when you want a hat you will keep wearing after the trip. A real cowboy hat in fur felt or quality straw is sized to your head, holds its crease, and looks at home at the Ryman, a nice dinner, or a daytime walk through a museum as much as at a bar. If you are someone who already owns boots and wants the hat to last for years, this is where to spend.

For a classic felt that dresses up easily, the Monterey 6X is a strong pick. It is 6X quality fur felt, handmade in the USA, with a 4 1/4 inch cattleman crown, a 4 1/4 inch brim, a genuine leather sweatband and a tooled leather band with silver-tone conchos. In black it goes with nearly everything on a night out, and the fawn color sits nicely with brown boots and denim.

Packing the hat and getting the size right

A fitted western hat needs your real head size. Measure around your head just above the ears and across the forehead, where the hat will sit, and check our sizing guide before you order. Party hats are simpler: our faux-fur and retro styles come in one size M, roughly 56 to 58 cm, which is about a US 7 to 7 1/4.

  • Flying: wear the felt hat on the plane or carry it, crown down, rather than crushing it in a bag. Straw is more fragile than it looks, so give it the same care.
  • In the hotel: rest the hat upside down on its crown, or hang it, and keep it away from the heater vent.
  • In the rain: felt handles a light shower fine. Let it air-dry naturally and never near direct heat. Straw should stay out of the rain when you can help it.

Order with time to spare. We ship in 1 to 2 business days and transit runs 3 to 6 business days, with free US shipping, so give yourself about two weeks before the trip. If the fit is off, unworn hats with tags can come back within 30 days. Pack the hat that suits the night you have planned, and have a good time in Music City.
