Festival Hat Guide: Three Days of Sun, Dust and Dancing in One Hat
Heat, dust, packing, sun and a crowd that keeps knocking into you. A practical plan for getting one party hat through a full festival weekend and still liking it on Sunday night.
A festival is the hardest test a hat will ever get. It sits in a hot car, gets stuffed into a tent, takes dust from every direction, and then spends six hours on a head that is jumping up and down. Most hats survive it fine if you plan a little. This guide covers the boring parts that decide whether your hat makes it to the last set: heat, packing, sun, outfits and keeping the thing attached to your head.
One note before we start. Every festival sets its own rules, so check your festival's hat and bag policy before you build a whole look around something you might have to carry in your hand.
Pick the right hat for the heat
Be honest about the forecast. A disco cowboy hat is a party piece first, and the two we stock behave very differently once the temperature climbs.
The Plush Party Faux-Fur is shaggy faux fur over a bell crown. It looks fantastic under stage lights and in photos, and it is warm, because fur of any kind holds heat. At a desert afternoon set it will feel like wearing a small pet. At night, when the temperature drops and the lights come on, it is the most fun hat on the field. It comes in brown, black, white, rose red, light pink and mint green, so it is easy to match to a night outfit.
The Dancehall Retro is a felt-look polyester hat with a bell crown, a studded band and a silver longhorn medallion. It has a smoother, lighter feel than fur and reads as a western silhouette from across a crowd. If you want one party hat for the whole weekend, this is the more practical pick. It comes in 12 colors, including red, wine red, navy, army green, camel and white.
If you expect real daytime sun and care more about shade than sparkle, a straw western is the working option. The Sawmill Palm Leaf Western is palm leaf straw with a 3 1/2 inch brim, a pinch front crown, a two-tone pick stitch leather hatband and a DRI-LEX absorbent sweatband. It costs $75 and comes in S, M, L and XL. Plenty of people bring one straw cowboy hat for the afternoons and a party hat for after dark, and that is the setup we would choose ourselves.
| Time of day | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Noon to 5 pm | Sawmill Palm Leaf Western or Dancehall Retro | Wider brim and a lighter feel when the sun is high |
| Golden hour | Dancehall Retro | Color and the medallion show up well in low light |
| After dark | Plush Party Faux-Fur | Cooler air, stage lights and fur texture in photos |
Packing without crushing it
The crown is the part that gets ruined in transit. A dented brim usually comes back; a crown that spent two days under a sleeping bag often does not look quite right again. A few rules help:
- Wear it while you travel. On your head is the safest place for a hat. If you are driving, put it on the passenger seat or the back shelf, never under a cooler.
- Keep the box if you have room. Our hats ship in a crush-proof box. If the car has space, that box is the best storage you will get all weekend.
- Fill the crown. Stuff the crown loosely with a T-shirt or socks so nothing presses it flat. This also turns the hat into useful packing space.
- Rest it upside down. In the tent, set the hat on its crown with the brim facing up. Resting it on the brim flattens the brim over time.
- Skip the hot trunk. A closed car in summer gets very hot. Bring the hat into the shade with you if you can.
Sun and dust
A hat helps with sun, but it is not sunscreen. A bell crown party hat shades your forehead and eyes and not much else, so your ears, nose and the back of your neck still need cover. The wider brim on a straw western shades more of your face, and you still want sunscreen under it. Reapply in the afternoon, because sweat takes it off faster than you think.
Dust is the other enemy. It settles into faux fur and shows on dark polyester. Deal with it every evening rather than once at the end:
- For the Plush Party Faux-Fur, take it outside the tent, give it a firm shake, then work through the fur with your fingers in the direction it lies.
- For the Dancehall Retro, wipe the surface with a dry, clean cloth or use a lint roller on the crown and brim.
- For a straw hat, brush it lightly with a soft dry brush and let it air out overnight.
Keep water away from all three. A damp hat picks up more dust, and a wet straw brim can lose its shape.
Building outfits around one hat
The easiest festival wardrobe starts with the hat and works down. Pick the hat color first, then choose three outfits that all work with it. That way you are packing one hat, not three.
With a white or camel Dancehall Retro, almost anything goes: denim cutoffs, a fringe vest, a metallic top, white boots. Navy and army green read a little more rugged and pair well with black, khaki and silver jewelry. A red or wine red hat carries a lot of color on its own, so keep the rest of the outfit quieter and let the hat be the loud part.
The Plush Party Faux-Fur is softer and sillier. Light pink and mint green work with sequin skirts, iridescent jackets and glitter on the cheeks. Black and brown suit a darker look, like a mesh top, leather shorts and a chunky belt. The hats themselves have no sequins, rhinestones or lights, so if you want shine, put it in the clothes and let the hat bring the texture.
Tip: take one photo of each outfit with the hat on before you leave home. When you are tired on day three, you will be glad you do not have to think.
Keeping it on in a crowd
Fit matters more at a festival than anywhere else, because you will move more than usual. The faux-fur and retro party hats are one size, M, which is 56 to 58 cm, roughly US 7 to 7 1/4. Measure around your head just above the ears before you order. If you sit near the small end, a strip of hat sizing tape inside the band snugs the fit.
- Pin it. Two bobby pins through the inner band into your hair, one on each side, will hold a hat through most dancing. Crossed pins hold better than straight ones.
- Mind the wind. A gust catches the brim from the front. Tilt the hat forward slightly and hold it on the walk between stages if it is breezy.
- Take it off in the pit. Near the front of a crowded stage, hats get knocked off and stepped on. Hold it against your chest or hand it to a friend further back for that set.
- Hair choices help. Low braids or a low ponytail sit well under a hat. A high bun pushes the crown up and makes the fit loose.
Before you leave for the weekend
Order early enough. We ship in 1 to 2 business days, and transit takes 3 to 6 business days within the US, with free shipping. If the festival is less than ten days away, order now and try the hat on as soon as it lands. Returns are accepted within 30 days on unworn hats with tags, so do your fitting indoors before the weekend, not at the gate.
Pack a small kit to go with the hat: bobby pins, sizing tape, a lint roller and a spare T-shirt to stuff the crown. That is all it takes to wear a hat from Friday's first set to Sunday's encore and bring it home in one piece.
